The January 8-9 storms built slabs 20-60cm thick on top of a weak snowpack consisting almost entirely of facets and depth hoar from our long December drought period. The most worrisome places today are North, East, and some West-facing slopes at upper elevations where the heavy snowfall and wind-transport built stronger, more cohesive slabs. Many of these slabs are becoming weaker and less reactive as we head delve head-first into high pressure, but it remains essential to stay careful and know what you're up against. Look closely for signs of instability such as cracking and collapsing as these are signals that you've found the recipe for an avalance, and take the time to dig down and look for this strong-over-weak structure if you're not getting these definite red flags. Any avalanche triggered could be large enough to injure or bury you while running on or near the ground.
A couple of natural avalanches on the backside of Kachina Peak (ENE aspect). It looks like they started as loose snow avalanches in the steep terrain above before stepping down into a persistent slab avalanche. This most likely happened during the intense precip rates on the morning of 1/9.
