Newberry

Sunday will see some mixed precipitation in the Newberry zone with minimal snow accumulation, resulting in another day of avalanches being unlikely. Be mindful of hazards such as rocks and downed logs that may be disguised under a thin blanket of new snow.

Although it's getting a bit sportier to access the lake elevation from 10-Mile Sno-Park due to recent snowmelt, trail #11 to the main road is still a reasonable snowmobile route. Once you get above lake level, the impact of our recent dry spell becomes apparent as slopes start to have a very mixed bag of surface conditions depending on aspect and exposure to sun and wind. Unfortunately, Sunday's blip of moisture to this zone won't do much to change this, and you can expect most snow surfaces to be crusty from recent melt-freeze cycles with a light dusting on top. Shady slopes have harbored dry snow, and on the most sheltered, shady slopes there are well-developed faceted snow grains in the upper snowpack. The sunniest slopes are, unfortunately, melted out almost entirely. With this weather's anticipated influx of minimal rain and snow, I wouldn't expect a lot to change, except this more widespread dust-on-crust effect and some breaking down/settlement of lower elevation facets. 

The uppermost slopes on Paulina Peak (above 7600') could stay above the snow line and see higher accumulations than the 1" otherwise forecasted. It is difficult to tell exactly how much snow will fall on these uppermost reaches, but it's still not looking like much more than a couple of inches. Regardless, monitor these areas for deeper wind drifts and pay attention for any red flags such as shooting cracks and blowing snow that could signal the presence of small snow instabilities. Sheltered north slopes could be more reactive due to the presence of underlying weak snow (see Gabe's video below from 2/7).
