In sintesi

Above 2,500’ strong east winds will make it easy for a human to trigger a wind slab avalanche around a foot deep. There is also a chance of triggering an avalanche 1 to 3’ deep on a layer of buried weak snow. The safest option is to avoid steep wind loaded slopes, and consider more conservative objectives today if you find yourself above treeline.

    Strong east winds overnight and today will increase the size and chance of triggering a wind slab avalanche around a foot deep. These can be found above 2,500’ on steep wind loaded slopes. 

    Wind slab avalanches tend to form below ridges, under cornices and convex rollovers. Recent avalanches, blowing snow and shooting cracks are red flags indicating wind slabs are forming and capable of avalanching. 

    Traveling in avalanche terrain today is dangerous so it is recommended to be aware of these red flags as you travel, look for and avoid terrain that may harbor wind slabs, and ease into steep terrain. Mellower slopes are the safest option to avoid this problem.

    Above 2,500’ there are buried weak layers of snow that a human may trigger creating an avalanche 1 to 3’ deep, especially on steep wind loaded slopes. The storm that delivered 6 to 8” of new snow combined with strong winds from yesterday and today will continue to put a lot of stress on the snowpack.

    That being said, we are not entirely sure how easy it is for a human to trigger this weak layer. Poor visibility has made it difficult to see recent avalanche activity. Recent avalanches, shooting cracks and whumpfing sounds are red flags indicating that you are traveling over weak snow. Look for and avoid steep wind loaded slopes especially if they have these red flags. Keep in mind that you may not see any red flags with a persistent slab problem.

    Poor structure with a slab over layers of weak snow. This is much more concerning above 2,500'.
