In sintesi

Yesterday's storm built thin drifts of wind-blown snow in exposed middle and upper elevation terrain. These slabs are relatively small and isolated but may be easy to trigger, thanks to the weak snow underneath. In areas sheltered from the wind, generally stable avalanche conditions exist and large avalanches are unlikely.

    A weak storm yesterday brought 3-5 inches of new snow and strong winds blowing out of the W/SW. This combination built small but sensitive drifts in terrain exposed to the wind. You may find them in atypical locations, such as in middle elevation terrain that is often sheltered from the effects of the wind (photo at right/above). Though these slabs will be small and isolated, they may be large enough to knock you off your feet and carry you through some unpleasant terrain. Be alert to the consequences of triggering one of these slabs if you are traveling in steep, rocky, treed terrain. Even small slides may pick up speed rapidly, thanks to the stiff surfaces underneath. In the steep, alpine terrain of the Sawtooths, the combination of new snow and wind often builds slabs at the base of large cliffs and couloirs as well. 

    On Galena Peak, in a neighboring Forecast Zone, I intentionally triggered the small slide pictured at right/above. It failed at the interface between the new and old snow on a middle elevation slope that had been obviously wind-loaded.

    (1/31/2022) This small wind slab was intentionally triggered at 8,300' on the flanks of Galena Peak on January 31st.

Avalanche Discussion

In addition to the wind slabs described above, here are two other potential hazards to keep in mind if you're traveling in this zone today:

Deep Persistent Slabs: Weak, faceted snow exists near the base of the snowpack on most shady, middle and upper elevation slopes. Triggering an avalanche on this layer is unlikely, but not impossible. You're most likely to find trouble on slopes with the following characteristics:

  • Steep:  slopes steeper than about 35 degrees.
  • Rocky: slopes with variable snow cover due to the roughness of the terrain.
  • Wind-affected: slopes where strong winds produced variable snow cover.

Cornices: Yesterday's new snow and wind added a bit more mass to some of the impressive cornices that exist in this Zone. This new snow will make it more difficult to tell if you are traveling along a snow-covered ridgeline or out on a massive cornice. Cornices behave in unpredictable ways and your best bet for not getting tangled up with one is to avoid traveling on top of them. A failing cornice can make for a great trigger for the Deep Persistent Slabs described above.
