In sintesi

A more significant round of snow and wind peaks early Friday but building slabs will be ripe for human trigger all day. Steer around exposed slopes steeper than 35 degrees where recent or active wind transport has created punchy layers. Below treeline, anticipate mostly inconsequential wet loose avalanches before temperatures cool.

    A round of heavy snowfall and moderate to strong winds will build thick slabs in wind-exposed terrain Thursday night through the day on Friday. Your challenge will be to identify where the winds will be stripping snow and depositing that snow on the opposite side of ridgelines or where the slope drops away into canyons. Use the media example for a visual of clues that you might find to help you out. Cracking and propagation of that crack out from your mode of travel provides a warning as you enter wind-loaded terrain. Stick to wind-stripped slopes, ridgelines, and only venture onto wind-loaded slopes less than 35 degrees. Below treeline, wind slabs will be building during the day atop a refreezing rain crust. Steer around heavily wind-loaded features.

    Cornices have grown large and more reactive in recent days. Give them a wider birth near ridgelines. As they continue to build, they tend to break further back than you expect. The softer, sharper portion will highlight wind deposits on the slopes below.

    Example: In addition to actively blowing snow, textured surfaces and fresh drifts behind natural objects are all signs there could be fresh Wind Slabs nearby.

Avalanche Discussion

Mt. Hood meadows patrol reported 4-8" storm slabs that were reactive to explosive but not ski cuts Thursday morning. Rain fell on the snow up to around 5500 ft during the afternoon, initiating a round of small wet loose avalanches. Wind slabs didn't produce significant results near or above treeline. 

Rain will be possible below treeline once again below treeline, particularly early in the day on Friday. We think most of the wet loose activity will be limited, but avoid steep slopes if you find wet snow. Cooling temperatures should help resolve the issues.
