In sintesi

Dangerous avalanche conditions exist. Avalanches can be triggered today in steep wind loaded terrain at the mid and upper elevations.  Terrain near peaks and ridges, particularly in and around cliffs are most susceptible to failure.  Avoid areas that apear steep and  wind loaded, or deeper, than surrounding terrain.

    Soft and hard wind slabs have formed during the last several days. These slabs will be most sensitive in steep terrain at the upper elevations where they may be large and have depths of one to three feet. At the mid elevations, depths to two feet are possible, particularly in south facing and other terrain that may have developed crusts earlier in the week. At low elevations, the snowpack that was saturated on Tuesday has frozen and avalanches are unlikely except on isolated features.

    Old buried weak layers persist in the snowpack.  Although it has become unlikely for a single person to trigger an avalanche involving these layers in the Tetons, a slight chance continues for a large, hard slab avalanche to occur if a particularly weak, thin spot on a slope is crossed or if larger triggers such as a group of people or a moving wind slab impacts the  slope. These slabs could have depths of 4-6 feet. 

Avalanche Discussion

Over the last week over two feet of snow has been received in the Tetons. Most of that came during the last two days on the heels of a brief very warm period that brought heavy snow to higher elevations and  rain to the lower elevations.  This moisture and dramatic temperature swings have helped to lessen the chance of drawing out the old weakness in the snowpack, especially at the low elevations where the snowpack was shrink wrapped to the terrain.  These layers are not completely put to bed, as snowpits can still find the weakness, particularly the one buried in early December and the real test will be whether wind slabs from this cylcle cause their release. 

The danger today involving the new snow is real, particularly in the northern areas of the Tetons. 15 inches of snow fell at Grand Targhee in the last 24 hours. Although slabs will be right-side up with lower density snow over heavier snow, that is a lot of snow during a brief period and wind slabs will be sensitive in any steep terrain.
