The avalanche danger will increase this afternoon/evening as a small storm delivers strong winds and new snow. Until then, triggering an avalanche will be unlikely, and variable surfaces and slick conditions will remain the most prevalant hazard.

    As wind accompanies new snowfall this evening, unstable wind slabs may begin to form on a variety of surfaces. Look for stiff, hollow, textured snow and cracking beneath your feet to clue you in to this problem. Blowing snow is also a sign that unstable wind drifts are forming nearby. Be mindful of leeward terrain that captures snow, including slopes below ridgelines, bowls, depressions, gulleys, and chutes. Localized assessments of terrain, conditions, and snowfall totals will be helpful to navigate the rise in hazard this afternoon.

Avalanche Discussion

A small storm may deliver up to 7 inches of precipitation by tomorrow morning in favored areas of our zone, including areas along the sierra crest and north of Mammoth. This storm will be accompnaied by strong to extreme winds starting out of the south and shifting west, and will start off warm and end cold. Actualized precip totals and wind speeds will determine how much the avalanche hazard will rise, and the timing of this storm will determine when it may rise. 

For most of today, you can expect benign avalanche conditions. Variable surface conditions may pose challenging conditions for travel and navigation.  Sharps (crampons, ice axe, etc.) may be necessary, and can help prevent a slip and fall.  A fall in even benign terrain could have added consequences right now as many rocks, trees, and bushes are only shallowly buried or exposed.

With some incoming weather and precip, today is a great day to take stock of snowpack structure, changing surfaces and general coverage and conditions. Leeward areas with slick surfaces, or weak grains (facets) at/just beneath the surface will be the areas where instabilities are most likely to form tonight and into tomorrow.
