In sintesi

The possibility of triggering a small wet slide will increase today in high, steep, south-facing terrain as temperatures warm. Warming temperatures will soften the snowpack and could also increase the liklihood of triggering a large avalanche 1-3 feet thick. Very steep slopes should remain suspect. As snow surfaces become wet, seek out shadier aspects.

    Weak snow remains buried 1-3 feet on Togwotee. While it is unlikely you will trigger an avalanche on this weak layer, warming temperatures will make the overlying slab softer and more sensitive.  Very steep terrain is the most likely place to find a trigger point. Avoid steep sunny slopes later in the day that have had time to warm up. Wind-affected areas and rocky outcrops often hide thin spots where you can impact the weak layer.  Evaluate the snowpack and terrain with an eye for warming and thin spots. Sheltered terrain that is not affected by the sun and wind will hold the best and safest riding.

    Upper elevation, steep southerly slopes will become more sensitive throughout the day with sunshine and warming temperatures. We are going into our fourth day of temperature swings that will result in high temperatures above freezing. While it is unlikely that we will have any more natural wet loose activity, small human-triggered avalanches will be possible later in the morning and into the afternoon when southerly crusts thaw. As you ride today, watch for warming snow surfaces on sunny slopes. If things become wet and you start to see roller balls from your track, move to shadier aspects.

    Although not from this season, this is a good reminder of a wet loose avalanche that entrained a lot of snow. 

Avalanche Discussion

The last two and a half weeks have been mostly dry, with plenty of sunshine, cold (and warm) temperatures, and wind. These conditions have created a variety of snow conditions at and near the surface. Extensive faceting exists in shady sheltered locations, hard windboard exists in exposed areas, surface hoar has formed on the surface and exists under the most recent snowfall, and multiple crusts have formed on southwest through southeast slopes exposed to the sun. Most of this equates to an increase in avalanche activity during and after the next storm that will arrive tomorrow night. One weather model shows Togwotee receiving over 2.5 inches of water and over 30 inches of snow. Regardless of the totals, expect avalanche activity this weekend and create a mental model of where these current conditions exist and how that will affect danger this weekend.
