Scattered showers will decrease overnight, but precipitation will pick up again in the afternoon. The danger is generally Low, but later in the day, small new drifts could avalanche with a human trigger, especially as you gain elevation and wind speeds increase.

    As the day progresses, a couple inches of snow and moderate to strong winds could develop small, soft, wind slabs that may avalanche with a human trigger. The higher you go and the more wind effect there is, the more reactive these small slabs could be. Search for smooth, pillowlike drifts, actively blowing snow, or wind-textured surfaces.

    Focus on new slab depths. If drifts start nearing 6 inches in depth, or you find these shallow deposits slide easily on the underlying layer, consider steering clear of places where even a tiny slide could cause harm, like above terrain traps. Here, even a little slide that could knock you off your feet might send you off a cliff or into a gully, or through hard, unmoving objects like trees or boulders.

Avalanche Discussion

After a warm week, the odd large cornice falling, glide crack avalanching or other snow chunk coming down isn't completely out of the question. This could especially be the case if temperatures are warmer than expected and if the snow stays softer. Monitor changing conditions throughout the day and adjust your plan as necessary.

The previous week was a rollercoaster. A large storm ended Tuesday, with a peak in avalanche activity over the weekend with more avalanches until the end of the storm. Thursday through Saturday were warm; some might even say hot. Wet snow avalanches were reported, with large and some very large ones noted (Video Peak, Hidden Lake Peaks).

On Sunday, temperatures dropped slightly, and clear overnight skies led to a refreeze of the snow surface. Wet snow avalanche concerns quickly dissipated. Despite slightly cooler temperatures again on Monday, cloud cover and a bit of precipitation kept surfaces soft, but we'd like to think that for the moment, most of our wet snow avalanche concerns are behind us. 

For Tuesday, snow totals are only expected to reach a couple of inches, but increasing afternoon winds will keep drifting the small amounts we get. Tuesday night, a storm will produce a slightly larger amount of snow. If you make it into the backcountry, please share with us what you find by submitting an observation HERE or on the Avy App.
