In sintesi

Shifting winds may form unstable wind slabs on all aspects in the areas that received more new snow out of yesterday's storm. Watch for blowing snow and assess for shooting cracks in fresh wind deposits before committing to steep terrain. You could stick to wind sheltered slopes to avoid the problem.

You may be able to find wind slabs on all aspects today due to shifting winds. Overall, their distribution will be limited to areas that received the most new snow, such as Mammoth and high elevation terrain near the crest. You could find unstable wind slabs below ridgelines, in crossloaded depressions, and in confined gully features. Look for blowing snow, growing cornices, and cracking under your feet. Stiff, textured, hollow snow is a good indicator that you have found wind slabs. Sticking to lower angled slopes, and slopes protected from winds, can help you avoid triggering an avalanche.

Avalanche Discussion

Up to 7 in of new snow fell yesterday. This small storm heavily favored the Mammoth area, with some regions seeing sunshine and minimal precipitation. Field observers noted significant amounts of blowing snow and small reactive wind slabs on leeward terrain features. As winds shift to the northwest, wind slabs may form on new aspects. Hard crusts and near-surface facets at the new old interface could make small wind slabs more sensitive than you'd typically expect. Keep in mind that even a small sluff in steep or exposed terrain with obstacles such as rocks and trees could have higher consequences.
