In sintesi

Avalanches will be unlikely throughout most of the zone, thanks to slightly cooler temperatures and a welcome end to the rain. However, in areas near the Cascade Crest, be on the lookout for isolated areas of wet, heavy snow where you may be able to trigger an avalanche in very steep terrain. You will also likely encounter many non-avalanche hazards, such as open creeks, challenging travel, and low snow cover.

    After a few days of warm temperatures and rain, we will finally see slightly cooler temperatures and a break from the drizzle. There may even be some sun breaks in the afternoon. However, even with the dryer weather, you may still find some isolated areas where you could trigger a wet loose avalanche. The places you would encounter these are in areas near Chinook Pass and Bumping Lake, where significantly more snow accumulated before the switch to rain on Monday. Use caution if traveling in steep consequential terrain, and be aware of rocks, cliffs, open creeks, and other obstacles that can increase the consequences of being caught in even a small avalanche. If you are sinking deeply into wet, heavy snow or snow slides easily off of small steep test slopes, it is best to stick to low-angle slopes.

Avalanche Discussion

Most of the east south zone suffers from inconsistent and low snow cover. The prolonged dry and warm weather of January and February really took a toll on the snowpack, and the recent atmospheric river only further deteriorated conditions. Much of the snow melted back to bare ground at lower elevations, making access challenging in some parts of the zone. Similarly, shallow spots in the snowpack on more southerly slopes and near ridges shrunk, exposing rocks, trees, and dirt. You can expect deep, soggy, and challenging travel through wet unconsolidated snow in areas where you find a consistent snowpack. The snowpack increases dramatically as you gain elevation, especially on shady northern aspects.
