Cloudy skies, light rain, and warm temperatures will keep the snowpack from freezing and gaining strength. You could trigger loose wet avalanches on slopes 35 degrees and steeper, particularly Wednesday morning during the warmest and wettest conditions. Steer away from cornices and large consequential slopes during the ongoing thaw.

    Wet loose activity looks to continue, with the most reactive conditions expected for the first half of the day Wednesday before winds increase in the afternoon. Anywhere from 4-12in of soggy snow sits on a crust, and could slide easily with a human trigger in steep, unsupported terrain. Wet loose avalanches could gouge into the snowpack, build significant mass, and run far downslope. When you find wet sticky snow or see new avalanches, dial it back and stay off of and out from under steep slopes. We expect most of the natural avalanche activity to stay small, but you could see a larger avalanche in big complex terrain at upper elevations where more snow accumulated over the past few days.

Avalanche Discussion

Skies cleared Tuesday as the strong March sun beat down on Mt Hood with 7000ft temperatures near 55F. Several recent natural avalanches were observed up to D2 including cornice fall triggered wind slabs and loose wets on easterly aspects in White River Canyon between 5800-7400ft. Shallow, but long-running loose wet avalanches were also visible on the east face of Mt Hood in steep rocky terrain above the Newton Clark Glacier. Below 7000ft, loose wet avalanches were stubborn to human triggers, but once in motion would build mass and slide the length of any steep feature.

Storms since Friday (3/17) brought 8-15in of cold dry snow with precipitation favoring the south and west sides of Mt Hood. The more recent snow, the more there will be to entrain as wet avalanches run in the coming days. Wet avalanche activity may have already peaked, but will likely be ongoing with additional rain, warming, and sunshine through the end of the week.
