    What and where is it:  Around 8 inches of new snow over the last two days formed wind slabs on north through southeast aspects. Since then, strong west winds yesterday and today have scoured upper elevations and hardened surfaces in wind-exposed, mid-elevation terrain, improving stability in many locations. However, these slabs are still relatively new, and cold temperatures are slowing their stabilization. Treat any smooth, wind drifted snow with caution and evaluate it carefully before committing.

    How can you recognize it:  Snow surface texture can help differentiate wind slabs from wind scoured snow. Smooth pillowy areas that look attractive to ski are the new wind slabs which have some protection from the wind and will be the most likely to slide. Wind textured and old looking surfaces are less likely to slide. How can you manage it: Avoid steep, wind-loaded terrain. Travel on wind exposed, textured snow surfaces to minimize your chances of triggering an avalanche. With softer drifts, dig into the snow and evaluate stability. Yesterday’s weather of increasing winds and actively falling/drifting snow can create a strong over weak structure, a red flag indicating that slope may be unstable. 

Avalanche Discussion

The midweek storm remains stalled over the Canadian Maritimes, keeping the forecast area in cold, strong west to northwest flow. Over the last two days, this system delivered around 8 inches of new snow to upper and mid elevations, including several inches from upslope snow showers yesterday. Much of this snow was quickly redistributed by strong winds, forming wind slabs on north through southeast aspects.

Since then, persistent west winds yesterday and today have scoured upper elevations and hardened surfaces in wind-exposed middle elevation terrain, improving stability. However, in sheltered terrain it is still possible to find recently formed wind slabs that remain sensitive to a human trigger. In isolated locations, these slabs could be large, and triggering a D2 remains within the realm of possibility. Cold temperatures are slowing bonding within the new snow and at the slab interface.

Careful snowpack evaluation and conservative terrain choices are smart, especially when transitioning from wind-scoured surfaces into smoother, drifted snow.

Very strong winds will persist today (90–110 mph with gusts up to 130 mph), continuing to scour and firm exposed terrain. If this trend continues, tomorrow’s outlook is for generally Low Avalanche Hazard across elevations.
