Snowpack
South of a line from the Rhône to the Rhine, there are distinct weak layers in the lower part of the snowpack. These are particularly pronounced in Ticino, central Grisons, Engadine and the southern valleys of Grisons, especially on shady slopes sheltered from the wind, where avalanches can entrain the entire snowpack. Isolated avalanches may still be remotely triggered. The number of avalanche-prone locations is slowly declining. Given the unfavourable snowpack situation, the reported number of avalanches triggered over the last few days has been manageable.
Some avalanches may be triggered north of a line from the Rhône to the Rhine, especially in weak layers in the upper part of the snowpack. Fractures in deeper layers of the old snowpack are unlikely here.
Isolated gliding avalanches, mainly moderate in size, may still occur.

Outlook
On Wednesday, it will be sunny and mild in the mountains with light winds and a zero-degree level between 2600 m in the west and 2200 m in the east. On Thursday, there will be heavy cloud cover on the northern flank of the Alps over the course of the day, but conditions will be sunny in other regions. Temperatures will drop significantly. Winds will be light to moderate from the northeast, with a moderate Bise wind in the Prealps.
The danger of dry avalanches will continue to decrease, but only very slowly in Valais, Ticino and Grisons, where the avalanche situation will remain precarious for off-piste snow sports due to the weak snowpack structure.
