Avalanche Activity

New snow and wind slabs are to be assessed with care and prudence. Backcountry touring calls for extensive experience in the assessment of avalanche danger and careful route selection.

In particular in the regions exposed to heavier precipitation and on wind-loaded slopes numerous medium-sized and, in isolated cases, large dry slab avalanches are to be expected as a consequence of new snow and strong wind. The large quantity of fresh snow as well as the many extensive wind slabs can be released easily, even by a single winter sport participant, in all aspects above the tree line. Especially in the regions exposed to heavier precipitation the avalanches can be released in deep layers of the snowpack.

Snowpack Structure

The fresh snow as well as the extensive wind slabs are bonding poorly with the old snowpack in all aspects. The wind slabs are barely recognisable because of the poor visibility.

Tendency

The snowpack remains generally unstable. Down to 500 m snow will fall over a wide area.
