Avalanche Activity

Wind and new snow: Slab avalanches require caution.

As a consequence of new snow and a strong wind from southerly directions, avalanche prone wind slabs will form in the course of the day. The new snow can be released by a single winter sport participant. These conditions will bring about a weakening in deep layers of the snowpack as the day progresses in particular on steep north, northeast and east facing slopes. Avalanches can in some cases be released in near-ground layers reach large size in particular on steep shady slopes.

Snowpack Structure

The soft wind slabs are bonding only slowly with the old snowpack. Adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind. Weak layers exist in the snowpack in particular on shady slopes.
