Shallow pockets of windslab may be found above treeline, though a few inches of new snow probably won't be enough to increase avalanche danger. Conditions may be challenging on steep slopes, with a slippery crust under the shallow new snow.

    There may be enough new snow and wind to create shallow pockets of windslab in the alpine. If you find more than 6" of new snow, and signs of wind drifting, be careful of entering steep slopes with consequences. Wind slabs could be reactive, as they may not bond very well with a refrozen crust underneath. If you find signs of instability, such as shooting cracks in firm or cohesive snow, those are further clues to stay off consequential steeps. The most likely areas to find shallow slabs will be above treeline, and right near ridgelines and cornice features.

    There is potential for small loose dry avalanches on steep slopes especially in places where new snow accumulates, such as gully systems. Keep an eye out for these if snowfall rates pick up.

Avalanche Discussion

Not much precipitation is forecast, but with cold temperatures there is some uncertainty whether it will end up being two inches, or six. As such, take into account the amount of new snow that you find. About 0.75" of rain has recently soaked into the snowpack up to the highest elevations in the zone. This warm storm finished with an inch or two that is well bonded to a refrozen crust. You may be able to break through this crust in some areas, but not in others. Conditions may be quite icy, especially on steep slopes where hit the crust more readily. 

The early snowpack that was looking healthy for November has shrunk down in early December and melted quite a bit, so early-season hazards should be expected. Keep an eye out for open creeks, talus fields, buried logs, and small trees. 

During the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, continue to follow the latest guidance from local, state, and federal health officials. Avoid unnecessary risks that could impact first responders and stress medical resources.  Wear a mask when appropriate, practice social distancing, and consider recreating closer to home.
