Avalanche Activity

Increase in avalanche danger as a consequence of new snow and strong wind. The avalanche prone locations are to be found in particular in gullies and bowls, and behind abrupt changes in the terrain at intermediate and high altitudes.

The storm force wind will transport the fresh and old snow significantly. As a consequence of low temperatures, snowfall and the strong wind, the snow drift accumulations will increase in size. Adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls dry slab avalanches are possible, even quite large ones. Avalanches can be released, even by a single winter sport participant or triggered naturally. Weak layers exist in the old snowpack on northwest, north and northeast facing slopes. Avalanches can be triggered in the old snowpack reach large size in particular on northwest, north and northeast facing slopes.

Snowpack Structure

The small quantity of fresh snow and in particular the wind slabs formed by the strong wind are lying on the unfavourable surface of an old snowpack. Individual weak layers exist in the old snowpack especially on shady slopes. Avalanches can in some places be released in deep layers in particular on northwest, north and northeast facing slopes. Sunshine and high temperatures will give rise as the day progresses to moistening of the snowpack in particular on sunny slopes.
