In sintesi

Stable snow conditions on Monday will rapidly degrade as a warm and wet weather system moves into the area. Heavy snowfall, strong southwesterly winds and a rising snowline will likely create dangerous avalanche conditions by Tuesday afternoon.

    Heavy mountain snowfall is predicted at upper elevations today, especially along the Montana/Idaho border. These heavy accumulations will build through Wednesday and likely form dense slabs. This problem will become even more of an issue as rising temperatures may cause high elevation rain by Tuesday nite. This will add more weight and weaken the snowpack. Anticipate storm slabs and wet slabs to be a present concern at upper elevations through Wednesday.

    With fresh snow and strong south to southwest winds being forecast we can expect to see wind slabs build at upper elevations below ridgelines. Dense, heavy snow will likely be present at these locations. Look for pillowy appearance in the snow and cracking at the surface for clues when assessing stability.

    Warm temperatures will cause the rain/snow line to climb pretty high by Tuesday evening. Where the line will be is to be determined; but, the weather forecast has hinted at 7,000' possibly seeing rain and above freezing temperatures. Wet loose snow slides will be present and the lower elevation bands and possibly above treeline as well=time will tell!!

Avalanche Discussion

It's really all about the weather right now! On Monday I toured into the Purcell Range and found generally stable conditions and good snow for riding. All this goodness is about to  tank with the predicted weather. I don't actually have a crystal ball, and neither does the weather service. They do have some pretty effective prediction models however! Right now we are looking at "copious" amounts of moisture predicted for the Cabinets, strong winds, and a significant rise in temperatures. These factors will all combine to create a sharp rise in avalanche danger by Tuesday afternoon. Play a conservative game on Tuesday and Wednesday. I would probably not skip work to go riding; unless, you plan to avoid steep terrain and enjoy being out in the wind.
