Challenging travel conditions and icy surfaces may pose the greatest hazard on Thursday. Quiet weather and a firm and frozen snowpack will limit any avalanche danger.

Avalanche Discussion

Recent observations throughout the west slope of the Cascades indicate a strong and stable snowpack with generally safe avalanche conditions. Another 24 hours of cool, cloudy weather with a chance for a dusting of new snow will do little to change current conditions. Until more significant weather arrives, expect low avalanche danger to continue. The last reported avalanches were small loose wet slides on Monday that ran in steep, rocky, sun-exposed terrain. Snow surfaces are variable, and slick and icy conditions are easy to find. With firm conditions like this, even a simple slip could turn into a long and uncontrolled fall. At lower elevations, expect challenging travel conditions with downed trees, open creeks, and breakable crusts. Shallow slabs of wind drifted snow linger in leeward alpine terrain, but appear unreactive to triggers. Although avalanches are unlikely, always gather information as you travel and pay attention to changing conditions with aspect and elevation. Remember that even a small avalanche could have high consequences in extreme terrain. If you venture out Thursday, give yourself time and patience to deal with the many non-avalanche hazards currently present in the mountains.

During the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, continue to follow the latest guidance from local, state, and federal health officials. Avoid unnecessary risks that could impact first responders and stress medical resources.  Wear a mask when appropriate, practice social distancing, and consider recreating closer to home.
