As the day warms up, enough wet snow could develop for the possibility of loose wet avalanche activity on steep sun-exposed slopes. The avalanche danger will increase to MODERATE as the day warms up.

    Sunny skies and warmer temperatures will provide enough warming for wet snow to form on sun-exposed slopes. In some places, enough warming may occur for loose wet snow instabilities to form. Most of these would manifest as small roller balls or pinwheels, but in areas with the most warming, some loose wet avalanches may be possible. Steep sun-exposed slopes or areas around rocks, cliffs, and gully features that absorb more solar radiation represent the likely areas for loose wet instabilities to occur.

    Pay attention to changing snow conditions as you travel. As the day warms up the snow on sunny slopes will go from firm frozen crusts to shallow wet snow to deeper wet snow. Step off your equipment on a regular basis to check the depth of wet snow. If you sink into wet snow above your ankle, it's time to move to colder aspects or terrain less steep than 30 degrees. Even small avalanches could have increased consequences if terrain traps or other downslope hazards exist.

Avalanche Discussion

* Melt-freeze conditions exist on many SE-S-SW aspects below about 8500'. On sunny warm days, soft, wet snow can form on these slopes. On windy, cool, cloudy days they remain frozen. The snow on most E and W aspects and elevations above 8500' has not experienced as much melting and refreezing and has not quite transitioned to supportable spring melt-freeze conditions.

* Pockets of unconsolidated soft snow still linger on some northerly aspects in wind-protected below treeline areas. Some of the snow around the rain crusts near the surface of the snowpack has started to weaken (facet).

* Exposed rain crusts, melt-freeze crusts, and wind-scoured surfaces can be encountered on any aspect and elevation.
