Avalanche Activity

Forecast Snow Stability: Unstable windslab will develop through the period adding to existing accumulations mainly on North-East to South-East aspects above 900 metres. North and South aspects will also be affected. Fragile cornices will develop. The older snowpack will refreeze and become firm and stable. The avalanche hazard will be Moderate.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Snow showers throughout the period. Strong North-North-West winds back to the West in the latter part of the night and then veer to the North-West during the day. The freezing level will drop to around 400 metres overnight, rising only very slightly during the day. Observed Weather Influences: A showery day with snow falling to gradually lower levels. Gale force South-Westerly winds in the morning eased in the afternoon. The freezing level dropped from above the summits overnight to around 900 metres by midday and lower in the afternoon. ObservedSnowStability: Areas of unstable windslab were developing through the day with greatest accumulations on North to East aspects above 1000 metres. Fragile cornices were developing above these aspects. The older snowpack remains well bonded and stable. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
