Avalanche Activity

Forecast Snow Stability: Fresh unstable windslab will develop through the period mainly on North-West through North to East aspects above 1000 metres. For a time overnight there will be wet snow instabilities on these aspects between 900 and 1200 metres. Fragile cornices will be present above these aspects. The older snowpack will continue to have good stability. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: Storm force South-South-Westerly winds overnight veer to the South-West and reduce to gale force during the day. Precipitation, heaviest in the evening and morning, with the snow rain limit around 750 metres in the evening, rising to 1100 metres overnight and then gradually dropping to 400 metres by the end of the afternoon. The freezing level will rise to 1200 metres for a time overnight before dropping to 500 metres by the end of the afternoon. Observed Weather Influences: There were gale force West-South-Westerly winds and showers falling as snow above 750 metres. The freezing level was around 900 metres. ObservedSnowStability: Areas of fresh moderately bonded windslab are present mainly on North to East aspects above 950 metres. Fragile cornices are present above these aspects. The older snowpack has mainly frozen in the cooler temperatures and has good stability. The avalanche hazard is Moderate.
