Avalanche Activity

During the day: The strong wind will transport the fresh and old snow. The wind slabs can be released easily. or in isolated cases naturally,.

As a consequence of new snow and a gathering strong wind from northwesterly directions, large surface-area wind slabs will form in the course of the day especially above approximately 2000 m. The near-surface layers of the snowpack can be released even by individual winter sport participants on wind-loaded slopes. Such avalanche prone locations are to be found also in places that are some distance from ridgelines and in gullies and bowls, and behind abrupt changes in the terrain above approximately 2200 m, caution is to be exercised in particular along the border with France and along the border with Switzerland. Dry avalanches can be released in deep layers by large loads. These can reach quite a large size.

Snowpack Structure

In some localities 5 to 15 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, will fall from the afternoon above approximately 2000 m. Until Tuesday the wind will be strong. In particular at elevated altitudes snow depths vary greatly at elevated altitudes, depending on the infuence of the wind. The upper section of the snowpack is unfavourably layered and its surface has a melt-freeze crust that is not capable of bearing a load, in particular below approximately 2100 m. Over a wide area various wind slab layers are lying on a hard crust.

Tendency

The danger will not decrease for the time being.
