In sintesi

Rapid loading of new snow and strong wind yesterday stressed a weak snowpack. Triggering an avalanche on a steep or wind loaded slope is likely today. Travel cautiously and enjoy the snow in low angle terrain away from slopes over 30 degrees.

    Prolonged dry periods in November and December have created very poor snowpack structure that is very weak. The weak snow is now buried 1-2 feet deep beneath the 22 inches of snow that fell since Jan 4th. New snow yesterday with strong west winds stressed the weak snow and primed slopes to avalanche. Slides can be triggered remotely from gentle terrain above, below, or to the side of steep slopes snd may occur on slopes with trees. Wind loaded areas have the highest likelihood of triggering. Obvious signs of instability such as cracking and collapsing will help confirm the presence of unstable snow.

Avalanche Discussion

Over the last two days we have seen increased avalanche activity on the Jan 4th weak layer as the slab above the weak snow became more firm and cohesive. There are plenty of clear signs that the recent snowfall is now unstable. Today is a great day to enjoy that deep powder in lower angle terrain but be aware of slopes and other riders that may be above you.
