In sintesi

You can trigger large avalanches in drifted areas on the lee sides of ridges, under cornices, in steep drainages, or on open slopes in the alpine.  Avoid steep, obviously drifted slopes or terrain where the wind is actively depositing new snow.

    The new snow (~3ft in the last 48 hrs) is relatively  low density and will be easily transported by moderate southwest winds.  Wind slabs will remain reactive and continue growing in size and distribution throughout the day on Friday.   

    Today we found shallow (1’ deep), but reactive slabs in somewhat sheltered areas near treeline. We also noticed cornices that were reactive and easily collapsing on test slopes. Seeing these signs of instability kept my partner and I avoiding wind loaded slopes. 

    I would suspect the slab depth to increase to 2-4 feet in higher, more exposed terrain and that the slabs will vary in character depending on your location.  For example, in more exposed areas we observed firmer, more stubborn (or difficult to trigger) slabs, while near treeline and in less exposed areas, the slabs  were softer and more reactive. 

    Steer around steep drainage walls or large open slopes on the upper mountain that are being actively loaded by the wind.

Avalanche Discussion

 It's a very different landscape in the Mt Hood zone after 3 ft of new snow.  A key takeaway from today is that the snow is DEEP and travel is slow.  Snow immersion is a real hazard at this time, so I would suggest keeping your partners in close sight and giving tree-wells a wider buffer than usual.
