On Northerly, East, and a few West aspects at upper elevations, slabs up to several feet thick exist on top of an extremely weak, faceted snowpack. Many of these slabs have deteriorated and lost some of their ability to cause avalanches over the last week of dry weather, whereas others have hardened and become more cohesive thanks to ongoing winds. Take the time to get familiar with the snowpack you're up against, looking closely for a strong-over weak snow structure before committing to larger slopes above 35 degrees. This can be done by digging a snowpit or by pushing your ski or probe pole down into the different snowpack layers. You may not be getting much cracking and collapsing until you've passed the point of no return. Keep in mind that any avalanche triggered right now could be large enough to injure or bury you while running on or near the ground.
