In sintesi

Today brings a couple inches of snow and generally light winds. Danger will start as Low this morning and increase throughout the day. By this afternoon, you may be able to trigger shallow slabs on steep slopes. Watch for cracking in the new snow and active wind loading, both indicate instability.

    Togwotee is forecasted to get around 4 inches of snow with light winds. On steep slopes you may be able to produce avalanches failing up to 12 inches deep where snow that has fallen in the last 48 hours overlays crusts or weak snow.

    You may also be able to trigger shallow wind slab avalanches in wind exposed terrain at upper elevations where wind speeds exceed what is forecasted.

    Pay attention to changing conditions, if the weather intensifies and you notice cracking around your skis, blowing snow, or avalanches, danger has risen.

Avalanche Discussion

Weak snow is buried 4 to 12 inches below the surface depending on the location. In some places, snow that fell on 1/23 preserved the weak snow underneath. In some locations, the new snow and wind disturbed the old snow surface but still fell on 10 inches of weak faceted snow, and in other places the old snow was so disrupted that it fell on generally hard cohesive snow. What I am getting at is that there is a lot of variability in what is now buried underneath the soft snow surface that we see today. This may make it difficult to nail down exactly where these avalanches will occur. Whenever there is uncertainty, it is best to give potentially suspect terrain a wide berth until a better picture of the details is painted. For now, we know that this weak snow exists above 7,500’ up to around 9,500’ on aspects facing west to north to east in terrain that did not get hammered by winds. Keep this on your radar as we move forward.
