In sintesi

Saturday will be a transition day as falling snow levels and new snow and wind build fresh wind slabs on the upper mountain.  Wet snow avalanche problems will linger at lower elevations.

    There should be enough new snow and wind to build fresh wind slabs near and especially above treeline Friday night and Saturday.  Winds will become strong as they shift to SE on Saturday afternoon,  so slopes may become cross-loaded or slabs may build on unusual aspects.  It may be difficult to tell which slopes have been recently loaded.  Shooting cracks on test slopes or lower angle terrain are red flags that you're likely to trigger an avalanche on nearby steep slopes. 

    Near treeline might offer wet snow problems or wind slab problems, or neither, depending on how much temperatures drop and new snow falls through Saturday afternoon.  Be alert to changing conditions, the near treeline band may be lower hazard to begin the day and end the day with a shallow wind slab problem. 

    (1/7/2023) This small wind loaded test slopes cracked and failed. The slab was 4-6 inches thick (10-15cm).

    You may see evidence of a recent natural wet loose cycle from earlier in the storm as temperatures rose and snow changed to rain.  Natural wet loose avalanches should be unlikely after several days of warm temperatures.  However, if you are on a long steep slope, you might be able to trigger a wet loose avalanche that picks up steam further downhill.  Use extra care near terrain traps like cliffs, rocks, and other hazards that would amplify the consequences of a small avalanche.

Avalanche Discussion

We have limited reports from Mt Hood on Thursday and Friday due to poor visibility and snow conditions.  About an inch of water on Wednesday night translated into 4-6" of snow between 5-6000' with moderate to strong SW winds before changing to rain Thursday morning.  Mild and windy conditions continued for the remainder of Thursday through mid-day Friday.  Precipitation began to pick back up Friday afternoon and snow levels were starting their downward slide.   Prior to this storm,  NWAC forecasters found buried surface hoar sporadically throughout the landscape roughly 1.5' down in the snowpack (see photo).  While we don't know of any avalanches on this layer, we'll be looking in the snow to see if it survived the last few days.
