Avalanche Activity

The sometimes avalanche-prone wind slabs are covered with new snow in some cases and therefore difficult to recognise.

The fresh and older wind slabs are covered with new snow and therefore difficult to recognise. They can be released even by a single winter sport participant. This applies in particular on wind-loaded slopes, as well as adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls. Weak layers exist in the old snowpack in particular at elevated altitudes. Especially on steep north, northeast and northwest facing slopes the avalanches can be released in deep layers of the snowpack and reach large size in some cases.

Snowpack Structure

The fresh and older wind slabs are poorly bonded with the old snowpack. They are lying on unfavourable layers. High Alpine regions: Weak layers exist in the old snowpack especially on north, northeast and northwest facing slopes.
