In sintesi

Above 9,000 feet, up to 10 inches of new snow has fallen upon a weak layer of surface hoar and old snow facets and crusts. In steep terrain, backcountry riders and skiers will have the ability to trigger loose snow sloughs or soft wind slabs formed by varying winds over the last few few days. These slides could dig down into the older faceted layers. Avalanches are not expected where recent snow fell on bare ground.

In steep terrain at the higher elevations, soft slab avalanches and loose snow sloughs involving the new snow could be triggered by humans or release naturally on steep slopes. These slides could be 6 to 18 inches deep and may run long distances on slopes with long sustained steep pitches. Small slides can be dangerous above cliffs areas, terrain traps and during early season conditions when the snow cover is shallow.

Avalanche Discussion

( Discussion is generated from the previous day's afternoon forecast. )The next round of snowfall is expected to start in the early morning with snow continuing through the day on Wednesday. This system is expected to favor the Teton and Wyoming ranges with two to five inches possible at the higher elevations by the evening. Temperatures that are to drop below zero in the mountains are to have highs in the low teens while varying winds remain relatively light with five to twenty mile per hour averages. In the valleys, temperatures are to again swing from the single digits to the twenties. The general avalanche danger will remain Moderate in the Togwotee Pass area where loose snow sloughs and small wind slabs could be human triggered in steep terrain. In that area, more new snow has fallen and the old faceted snow cover is more prevalent. The danger will remain Low in the Teton and Southwest Trails areas where similar hazards exist in isolated areas. Predicted new snowfall and moderate winds will increase the chance for loose snow sloughing and for triggering small soft slabs as the day progresses.
