Cooler weather should help the upper snowpack gain strength and somewhat reduce the likelihood of a deep slab avalanche. However, the underlying persistent weak layer remains largely unchanged. Three days of warm weather only increases our uncertainty regarding this buried layer. Very large and destructive avalanches from 2/26-3/1 near Crystal Mt. should cause us to focus more on the consequences of any slide rather than trying to guess “if” we can trigger it. Many of these slides broke trees and traveled far distances. Consider significantly limiting or even completely avoiding very large avalanche paths. This includes their runout areas well below treeline.
Making relevant observations regarding deep slabs can prove tricky. You may see numerous tracks on a slope, not experience any cracking, and conditions may “feel” stable. This should not be taken as a sign of stability. Even snow profiles and snowpack tests can struggle to provide reliable information when the layer sites 6-10’ below the surface. Make sure to talk openly with your group about the potential consequences of traveling in larger terrain as you make your choices for the day.
