Avalanche Activity

Wet and gliding snow represent the main danger.

In some localities up to 20 cm of snow, but less in some localities, has fallen above approximately 2600 m. Up to 2300 m rain has fallen in some localities. The avalanche prone locations are prevalent and are barely recognisable because of the poor visibility. The avalanche prone locations for wet avalanches are to be found in particular on cut slopes below approximately 2500 m. From starting zones that have retained some snow in particular the wet avalanches can reach large size. The new snow is to be evaluated with care and prudence in all aspects above approximately 2500 m. In particular on very steep slopes and at the base of rock walls and behind abrupt changes in the terrain small and, in isolated cases, medium-sized avalanches are possible. Bases of rock walls are especially dangerous. As a consequence of new snow and a strong southeasterly wind, large surface-area wind slabs formed especially above approximately 2500 m. The avalanche prone locations are to be found in particular adjacent to ridgelines and in gullies and bowls in northwest to north to northeast facing aspects above approximately 2500 m. Transitions from a shallow to a deep snowpack where weaknesses exist in the old snowpack are especially dangerous. Avalanches can be triggered in the old snowpack and reach medium size. In some regions increase in danger of moist and wet avalanches.

Snowpack Structure

Precarious weak layers exist in the snowpack on northwest, north and northeast facing slopes. The sleet gave rise to a loss of strength within the snowpack over a wide area in particular on steep slopes below approximately 2200 m.
