Avalanche Activity

Wind slabs represent the main danger.

The sometimes strong wind has transported some snow. The large wind slabs can be released even by a single winter sport participant in all aspects above approximately 2000 m. This applies in particular at transitions from a shallow to a deep snowpack, when entering gullies and bowls for example. The current avalanche situation calls for careful route selection. As a consequence of falling temperatures, the natural activity of moist and wet avalanches will appreciably decrease.

Snowpack Structure

Over a wide area 100 to 150 cm of snow, and up to 180 cm in some localities, has fallen since Saturday. The moderate wind has transported the new snow significantly. The new snow has settled to a large extent at low and intermediate altitudes. Intermediate and high altitudes: Individual weak layers exist in the old snowpack especially on shady slopes. The surface of the snowpack will soften later than the day before. This applies in particular at low and intermediate altitudes.
