Avalanche Activity

CM for 17/1. Unstable windslab will persist. NE,E,SE above 900m, more localised N and S aspects. Cornices. Considerable hazard.

Forecast Snow Stability: Cold temperatures will cause instabilities in the snowpack to persist. Windslab will remain poorly bonded in many locations, with greatest accumulations on steep North-East to South-East aspects above 900 metres. More localised instabilities exist on North and South aspects with gullies particularly affected. Fragile cornices will remain present above all these aspects. Better stability on slopes scoured by the recent Westerly winds. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: A dry cold day with light to moderate Westerly winds. It will be freezing at most levels. Observed Weather Influences: A few light snow showers early on cleared to give a mainly dry day. Winds were moderate Westerly. Freezing at most levels. ObservedSnowStability: Weaknesses within the windslab continue to persist. Areas most affected are steep North-East to South-East aspects above 900 metres. More localised instabilities are present, particularly in gullies, on North and South aspects. Fragile cornices overhang all the above aspects. The avalanche hazard is Considerable.
