Avalanche Activity

Forecast Snow Stability: Wet snow instabilities will become increasingly prevalent and avalanches are likely, particularly on South-West through West to North aspects above 900 metres. The greatest instability will be located in areas such as corrie head walls, gullies and convexities. Cornices will be prone to collapse. Between 500m and 900m isolated wet snow instabilities will be present, mainly on steep banks and burn lines. Wind exposed slopes will be generally stable. The avalanche hazard will be Considerable.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: A band of showery rain arrives during the evening and persists throughout the period, falling as sleet initially and then rain to the higher tops overnight and into the morning. Strong East-South-Easterly winds will veer more Southerly through the day. The freezing level will be above the summits. Observed Weather Influences: Fresh snowfall overnight, lying to around 400 metres. Mostly dry through the day with fresh Easterly winds. The freezing level was initially at 500 metres and gradually rose to around 900 metres by the afternoon. ObservedSnowStability: There has been some consolidation of recent deposits of unstable windslab. However, weaknesses continue to be present, particularly on steep South-West through West to North aspects above 900 metres. Cornices are weak and prone to collapse. Below this altitude on steep convex terrain and burn lines moderately bonded windslab continues to consolidate. Wind exposed terrain is firm and icy. The avalanche hazard is Considerable.
