Avalanche Activity

Slab avalanches and loose snow avalanches are the main danger.

Little snow fell yesterday. 2 to 10 cm of snow, but less in some localities, fell yesterday above approximately 900 m. In particular on steep slopes medium-sized and, in isolated cases, large slab avalanches are possible as a consequence of new snow and strong wind. The fresh and somewhat older wind slabs can be released even by a single winter sport participant at intermediate and high altitudes. Ski touring and other off-piste activities, including snowshoe hiking, call for careful route selection.

Snowpack Structure

Up to 70 cm of snow, and even more in some localities, has fallen since Saturday. The easterly wind has transported the fresh and old snow. The various wind slabs have bonded with the old snowpack. Individual weak layers exist in the old snowpack especially on shady slopes.
