Avalanche Summary

Triggering an avalanche that breaks in weak snow below a thick slab is becoming more difficult with each passing day, but if you do, the consequences remain serious. It is easier to impact deeper weak snow layers where the snowpack is thin near exposed rocks, on the backside of steep rollovers, or below cliff bands. Avalanches triggered from a wind-drifted area could break wider and run farther than you anticipate. Steer clear of areas that appear smooth and rounded below ridgelines and in gullies where a smaller slide in surface layers could push you somewhere you don’t want to go. If you see cracking in the snow surface or hear audible collapses, stick to wind-sheltered areas or slopes around 30 degrees in steepness for safer travel options.
