In sintesi

A buried weak layer creates the potential for slab avalanches in steep terrain today. Recently wind loaded slopes have added a load to that layer that has proven to crack and fail by human triggering in isolated areas. While the threat of natural avalanches has passed, a skier or rider could find the weak spot in the slab and cause a larger than expected avalanche. Slab thickness could be five feet thick and possibly thicker in heavily loaded slopes such as beneath cliffs or ridge tops. Evaluate snow and terrain carefully to identify this hazard before committing to a slope. Lower elevations have less snow coverage making it unlikely to trigger an avalanche. Plenty of safe skiing and riding exists on lower angled slopes in wind sheltered areas where no slab exists over the buried weak layer.

    Buried, weak faceted snow remains a layer of concern in terrain above 8500 feet. This avalanche type could be triggered from a connected slope near a steeper slope or from below. A very large avalanche could occur on this problem layer especially where a thick slabs of wind drifted snow lie on top. A slab avalanche with a crown up approximately eight feet thick was reported on Monday on a heavily wind loaded slope west of the Tetons. Several other smaller but still potentially dangerous avalanches of this type have been reported in the past several days.

    Strong wind during the recent period of snowfall has drifted snow onto wind sheltered slopes and ridgetops. Signs of wind loading include cornices, wind textured surfaces and stiffer surface snow underfoot. These slabs are likely to be stubborn in most areas and anywhere between six inches and three feet thick.

Avalanche Discussion

Snowfall has begun to increase in intensity this afternoon. By morning expect new snow amounts to be 3-5” in the Tetons, 1-3” on Togwotee, and 2-4” in the Southwest Trails. Snow will taper off for a brief period tomorrow morning and resume again by early afternoon. By evening tomorrow expect 24 hour totals to be 6-8” in the Tetons, 2-4” on Togwotee and 4-6” in the Southwest trails. Winds overnight will veer from the southwest to west and be in the 20-30 mph range. Temperatures will be slightly warmer but still remain in the single digits at ridgetops and high teens to low twenties in the valleys.With two more rounds of incoming precipitation in the next 24 hours, expect wind slabs to build in leeward starting zones. These new slabs will become more likely to trigger as the day progresses. This could help to increase the likelihood of persistent weak layers activating as well. Because of these factors, expect a modest rise in avalanche danger at the mid and upper elevations. The amount of new snow will determine the avalanche danger, with the upper elevations of the Tetons potentially rising to Considerable in the afternoon, and the mid elevations remaining Moderate. Expect the upper elevations of the Southwest Trails area to remain Considerable and the upper elevations of Togwotee to remain Moderate. The danger will remain Low in the low elevations in all forecast areas.
