In sintesi

The avalanche danger will remain LOW at all elevations today since cold temperatures and blustery N-NE winds should keep most of the snow surfaces frozen. Icy surfaces and variable snow conditions present additional hazards including long sliding falls and challenging travel conditions. Travel using normal caution and be willing to step back into safer terrain if conditions warrant.

Avalanche Discussion

Normal caution

Rain, wind, and melt-freeze conditions have left firm icy rain crusts, melt-freeze crusts, and uneven wind scoured surfaces on most slopes in the backcountry. Cold weather and N-NE winds should keep the majority of these surfaces frozen today. A few pockets of discontinuous "dust on crust" or soft cold snow may still linger on isolated N-facing slopes sheltered from the winds. The firm and variable conditions make backcountry travel challenging and add concerns like the potential for uncontrollable long sliding falls.

Factor the firm snow and uneven surfaces into your travel plans today. Focus on matching terrain to your group's abilities. Monitoring the snow conditions and talking about them with your group can help avoid ending up in an area where conditions exceed your group's abilities or comfort levels.

Recent Observations:

* Observers reported blowing snow and more wind scouring from strong winds yesterday in the Mt. Rose backcountry. Sunny aspects on Relay Peak remained firm and mostly frozen for much of the day. Wind-affected snow surfaces were reported in traditionally sheltered areas like Chickadee Ridge as well.

* Observers reported that the lingering pockets of shallow, cold, unconsolidated snow are getting harder to find.

* Rain crusts, melt-freeze crusts, and firm wind scoured surfaces are widespread across the forecast area.
