Avalanche Activity

NC for 3.3. Mostly well bonded and stable. Patchy windslab on SW, W, NW and N (crossloading) above 1000m. Avalanche Hazard Low.

Forecast Snow Stability: The snow will be well bonded and stable in most locations. A thin covering of soft snow will continue to overlie the older snowpack, which will remain firm above 1000 metres. Patchy accumulations of soft windslab will be deposited overnight on South-West through West to North aspects above 1000 metres. Accumulations will contain weaknesses where they achieve depth, in steep wind sheltered locations. Slopes exposed to the wind will become scoured. The avalanche hazard will be Low.

Snowpack Structure

Forecast Weather Influences: No precipitation is expected. Winds will be from the East-North-East and fresh overnight, becoming light and variable Northerlies during the day. The stable airmass will result in icy surfaces from an altitude of 500 metres upwards. Observed Weather Influences: A dry day was preceded by overnight snow above 650 metres. Winds were generally from the North-East and fresh in strength. The stable airmass resulted in summit temperatures of around -3 degrees Celsius, and icy surfaces from around 700 metres. ObservedSnowStability: A cosmetic dusting of fresh snow overlies the older snowpack, which is firm and icy on North through East to South-East aspects above 1000 metres. Localised patches of weakly bonded snow have been deposited in wind sheltered locations such as corrie rims and gully tops, on South-West through West to North aspects above 1000 metres. The avalanche hazard is Low.
