New snow, a burst of winds, and a cooling trend should combine to create wind slab danger. People could trigger large wind slabs on upper elevation slopes on Wednesday. Use an assessment mindset and look, listen, and feel for instabilities as the long storm is just wrapping up, for now.

    New snow should continue to slowly add up as temperatures cool. Wind slabs are most likely to be triggered in steep, upper elevation terrain that has been drifted over. Look for signs of new snow problems like shooting cracks and feel for dense drifts over weaker snow as you travel. Temperature fluctuations during the snowfall may be enough to create unstable storm snow even outside of wind affected areas. Use small, wind loaded test slopes to check how the new snow is reacting. Steer around steep slopes during times of increased wind drifting, or if you find instabilities. Quick hand pits, shovel tilt tests, and extended column tests are also a good way to look for unstable snow.

    As the storm is only beginning to wind down on Wednesday, it won't be a bad idea to give the new snow another day to bond before stepping out onto steep slopes at upper elevations.

Avalanche Discussion

Expect a slow cooling trend and another round of snow into Wednesday. On Tuesday, it sounded like the travel was difficult, with deep heavy snow. Josh reported finding about 16" of new snow over the recently buried crust near the Cutthroat drainage. He found some storm instabilities with tests, but the new snow was bonding well to melt forms from the rain event. 

From the 23rd to the 27th,  Washington Pass picked up a significant amount of snow, some sleet, freezing rain, and rain. The extent of any recent natural avalanche activity from the recent storms is still unknown with limited obs and deep snow travel. At the lowest elevations where weak, faceted layers probably existed before they got rained on, use caution if you find saturated and punchy snow that hasn't yet refrozen. Wet, mushy, and unsupportable snow are indicators that wet avalanches are possible.
