In sintesi

MODERATE avalanche hazard exists near and above treeline this morning while LOW avalanche hazard exists below treeline.  Fresh and sensitive wind slabs will be our primary concern on all aspects near and above treeline.  Loose wet sloughing will also be possible today on solar aspects and at lower elevations. Evaluate snow and terrain carefully, identify features of concern and be ready for changing conditions as the day progresses.

    Our most recent storm brought snow totals ranging from 3” up to 10” in localized areas. Recent observations suggest the highest storm totals are along the Sierra crest and at higher elevations.  Strong winds have been shifting around the compass rose and are expected to continue out of the north today at transportable speeds.  Continued slab development will be most likely on southerly aspects today however it will be possible to find fresh wind slabs sensitive to human trigger near and above treeline on all aspects.  Expect the size and distribution of fresh wind slabs to be greater in areas with higher snow totals. Large drifts, recent cornice growth, hollow upside-down feeling snow, and uneven snow surfaces are all clues that indicate nearby wind deposits. Do your own localized assessments and be suspect of terrain features that encourage drifting such as the leeward sides of ridgelines, alpine couloirs, gully features, and cross-loaded depressions.

    Temperatures will be significantly warmer today with partly cloudy skies and decreasing winds. Some surface moistening and an increased risk of rockfall should be expected on solar aspects and at lower elevations as the sun returns this afternoon.  Keep an eye out for early warning signs such as sticky and moist surface snow, upside-down feeling snow, and rollerballs & pinwheels. These are clues that may foreshadow larger point-release avalanches. Consequential areas of unstable snow are more likely in areas with higher snow accumulations from yesterday’s storm.  Be wary of your exposure to terrain hazards and be prepared to retreat to more shaded aspects if you notice that surface warming is reaching concerning levels.

Avalanche Discussion

New snow and mild weather will be a powerful draw to the backcountry enthusiast today. Fight the powder fever and keep in mind that we have stability concerns affecting all elevations and aspects today. Spring is in full effect here on the eastside and the snowpack will be in a state of transition. Loose cold surface snow will likely stiffen becoming moister as the day progresses.  The backcountry enthusiast will be able to monitor this shift throughout the day.  Keep in mind that the snowpack doesn’t like to see rapid change. Those of you who see MODERATE as the new LOW may be surprised today. While avalanches of concerning size are expected to be more isolated in distribution small areas of unstable snow will likely be pretty sensitive as recent snow accumulations see their first big warm-up.

 In addition to increased stability concerns, our variable and challenging surface conditions should also remain top of mind. Recent observations continue to highlight our dwindling coverage. Expect new snow to hide recently exposed obstacles such as rocks, fallen trees, bushes, and large areas of bare ground.  Remember to slow it down and be mindful of areas where these obstacles will be more widespread such as solar aspects and lower elevations.
