In sintesi

The avalanche danger is Moderate above 8,000 feet today. New snow and wind in the last 24 hours has formed wind slabs that may be sensitive to human triggers. Persistent layers buried deeper in the snowpack hold the potential to produce larger avalanches in steep terrain. With this combination in mind it will be important to approach terrain cautiously today. The danger is Low in the lower elevations where shallow wet loose avalanches will be possible in steep sunlit terrain and be low in volume. In these areas pay attention to snow surfaces and move off of slopes as the snow becomes damp.

    6-10” of new snow fell in the mountains yesterday. This snow was accompanied by strong winds. The wind shifted from south in the morning to northwest in the afternoon. This has helped to form slabs on a variety of aspects in the mid and upper elevations. These slabs will be up to a foot in depth and be easier to trigger in steep terrain receiving direct sunlight. Triggering a wind slab may be enough to create added stress and step down to deeper weak layers today.

    Weak layers that formed during an extended dry spell in January and February have shown to be reactive in steep terrain above 8,000 feet. A series of storms in the month of March gradually developed slabs over those weak layers. Those layers are now buried 1-3 feet deep. While activity on these layers has not been widespread, the avalanches that have been triggered have been large. One such avalanche resulted in a fatality on March 17th. Terrain that had avalanched in early January appears to be the most likely type of slope to produce larger avalanches today. Knowing where these paths are can be helpful, but it is simpler to consider all steep terrain above 8,000 feet guilty until proven innocent. Typical warning signs such as collapsing and cracking may not occur prior to triggering.

Avalanche Discussion

High pressure has moved into the region. Skies will be clear tonight and sunny tomorrow. Overnight low temperatures will be in the low teens at 10,000 feet and mid to high teens in the valleys. Tomorrow temperatures will rise into the high twenties at ridgetop level and mid to high thirties in the valleys. Winds will be out of the northwest and north at 15-20 mph.In the Southwest Trails forecast area the danger will remain Moderate above 8,000 feet. Persistent slab avalanches 1-3 feet deep will be possible to trigger in steep terrain. Avalanches triggered at these depths will be large enough to bury a person. Isolated pockets of wind slab may be encountered in upper elevation starting zones and be difficult to trigger and small in size. In the Teton forecast area the danger will also remain Moderate above 8,000 feet. The likelihood of triggering persistent slab avalanches will be lower than in the Southwest Trails, but the consequences will be the same. Lingering pockets of wind slab may also be encountered in steep upper elevation terrain.On Togwotee Pass the danger will be Moderate above 9,000 feet. Persistent slab avalanches 1-2 feet in depth will be possible to trigger in very steep terrain.Below 8,000 feet in the Southwest Trails and Teton forecast areas and below 9,000 feet on Togwotee Pass the danger will be Low where avalanches will be unlikely with shallow wet loose avalanches being the exception.
