In sintesi

Avalanches large enough to bury or injure a rider remain possible in the Central OR Cascades.  These avalanches will be isolated to wind-loaded slopes at high elevations, and seldom ridden, steep, slopes that are sheltered from the wind and sun.  Understanding the current avalanche problems and where they exist will allow riders to maximize rideable terrain safely.  Otherwise, enjoy the fabulous snow that we have on less steep or smaller slopes.

    On slopes that are generally protected from the wind and sun, weak faceted snow from January's drought now underlays approx. 85 cm of snow from the last 10 days.  While reported avalanche activity on this layer has tapered off, we can't rule out the possibility of triggering a relatively large avalanche.  Slopes that were ridden heavily during the January drought are less likely to have this preserved weak layer.

    If you are venturing off the beaten track to ride in steep, sheltered terrain, some snowpack investigation would be worthwhile.  Similarly, conservative riding like avoiding trigger points would be prudent.

    I observed Calm and Light wind speeds on Tuesday near treeline and relatively little Wind Slab development.

    Looking at weather stations throughout the region, I noticed some of our windier spots like Santiam pass were recording Moderate winds.  There is a lot of soft snow available for transport, and I wouldn't rule out the possibility that riders find isolated pockets of Wind Slab at alpine elevations.  On large terrain features, these Wind Slabs could be large enough to bury or injure a rider.  Older Wind Slabs will take longer to stabilize during our current cold weather.  Determine the extent of recent wind loading before committing to the bigger alpine slopes.
