In sintesi

Snowmobile and skier triggered avalanches are likely today in steep terrain. Natural avalanche activity was observed yesterday and will be possible today. Current conditions warrant extra caution, as triggering avalanches may result in injury or burial.

The snowpack on Togwotee Pass is in a tenuous state.  Loading over the last week has been gradual.  New snow in the form of slabs sits on a weak base. Triggers in the form of snowmobiles, skiers and riders will be enough to tip the scales and produce avalanches 1 to 3 feet in depth. Approach all terrain with suspicion and use safe travel practices. Only expose one person at a time, stop in islands of safety and communicate your plans with your party. Be alert to the potential for remote triggering and for avalanches to propagate across entire slopes. Conditions are dangerous and warrant respect.

Avalanche Discussion

Prior to snowfall that began on Jan 5, the Togwotee Pass zone endured a month-long stretch of mostly dry and cold weather.  This helped to form weak snow at the surface in the form of facets and surface hoar.  Since snowfall began, those weak surfaces have remained intact where they have not already avalanched. It will take time for that interface to “heal” and gain enough strength to reduce the likelihood of triggering an avalanche. This is a good time to stick to lower angled terrain and allow the snowpack time to adjust to this most recent load.
