Dangerous avalanche conditions exist. While natural activity is becoming less likely, you could trigger a sizeable avalanche in steep wind-loaded terrain near and above treeline. Sticking to sheltered low-angle terrain is the best way to stay safe.

    You could still trigger a cohesive slab of wind-drifted snow on the leeward terrain near and above treeline. Strong to extreme winds in the last 24 hours have built a slab capable of large to very large avalanches. As the wind changes direction and decreases in speed, natural activity will become less likely. However, human-triggered avalanches big enough to bury you remain likely on wind-loaded slopes.  Avoid leeward terrain steeper than about 30 degrees. Surface clues such as recent cornice development,  drifted snow, a textured surface, shooting cracks, and collapsing in the new snow will indicate you have found areas of concern. Sticking to sheltered, low-angle terrain will help you to avoid this problem.

    As we move out of our stormy period, storm instabilities will begin gaining strength. While storm slabs will become less sensitive throughout the day, large avalanches failing in the new snow could be sizeable. This problem will take time to heal and will become less likely to trigger in the coming days. Approach steep slopes with caution and be mindful of your exposure to terrain features that increase the consequences of avalanches.

Avalanche Discussion

Well over five feet of snow in the last four days, combined with strong winds, has overwhelmed the east side, resulting in power outages, road closures, and elevated avalanche hazard. An avalanche on Mammoth Mountain caught and carried two patrollers during mitigation efforts on 12/26. We at ESAC are hoping for a speedy recovery for those involved. This is a sobering reminder of the risk of travelling in avalanche terrain. As we enter a period of clearing skies and warming temperatures, the pull of fresh snow will be strong. It is critical to keep your margins tight. Conditions remain dangerous, large human-triggered avalanches are likely, and caution must be exercised. If you choose to venture into the mountains today, travel with humility and make the goal of your day a safe return home to friends and family.
