In sintesi

Avalanches will be possible in wind drifted snow, particularly at the higher elevations in the Monument.  Be cautious on slopes that face North and East and lie below ridge tops, or are adjacent to ridges or treelines.  These features catch wind blown snow and are prime locations for Wind Slab avalanches.  These areas of deeper snow might be particularly alluring at times like this when our snowpack is a bit shallower.

We saw steady snowfall on Thursday night and during the day Friday.  The wind does a great job of redistributing this new snow from the windward side of features to the leeward side.  While the wind was blowing from the South on Friday morning, it has shifted to the West and may even swing a bit Northwest.  I would be cautious on any slopes that face North or East and are positioned below ridge-tops, or next to mid-slope ridges and treelines.

Avalanche Discussion

It felt great to be out riding and to see other folks out at Paulina today.  Finally, a good dose of winter!  There are still lots of logs and obstacles throughout the lower elevation forests, but the trails were great, and I started thinking about riding in open areas for the first time.  At 6,800 ft. I measured 50 cm. of snow.  Up on the summit, we've been finding  between 50 cm. and 1 meter.
