In sintesi

Light amounts of new snow and strong winds could form small slabs of wind blown snow today.  These would most likely form in areas that receive the most new snow and could exist below ridges, in gully features, and on open slopes.  Pay attention to your surroundings if travelling today in the backcountry, change plans if you see unstable snow developing or unexpected conditions. 

Avalanche danger is expected to increase tonight and into Wednesday as this storm brings more snow to our area.

    Look for new snow, blowing snow, and small wind pillows as clues to where any slabs of wind blown snow could be forming.  Wind slabs are expected to be small in size and not extend very far downslope today due to limited new snow available for wind transport.  Triggering a small wind slab above cliffs, rocks, or one of the countless obstacles out there could have increased consequences.  Change plans if you see snow surface cracking in wind deposited locations or active blowing snow occurring.

    Small amounts of new snow are expected for today, 0 to 2 inches, with moderate to strong South winds.  Wind slabs would most likely form below ridges and cornices, in gully features, and on open slopes.  Avalanche danger is expected to increase late today and into Wednesday as this storm intensifies with additional snowfall.  

Avalanche Discussion

Variable snow surface conditions continue.  A thin surface rain crust has formed in some areas of the forecast region, potentially up to 8000-8500' or higher, from recent light rain events.  On northerly aspects, dry near surface facets can be found below this rain crust and at upper elevations where this rain crust does not exist.  Southerly aspects have established melt freeze crusts.  These melt freeze crusts are expected to remain mostly firm all day today with the increasing clouds and wind.  

Lower elevations and sun exposed slopes have experienced significant snow cover loss over the last 2-3 weeks with areas of dirt, rock, and down trees exposed.  Deep open holes, open creeks, and ponded water are widespread in low lying areas, especially below 8,000'.
