Snowpack Structure

The sometimes strong wind has transported some snow. In some cases the wind slabs have bonded still only poorly with the old snowpack. Over a wide area various wind slab layers are lying on a hard crust. At higher altitudes snow depths vary greatly, depending on the infuence of the wind. In all regions below approximately 2000 m from a snow sport perspective, in most cases insufficient snow is lying.

Tendency

The weather conditions will foster a gradual strengthening of the snow drift accumulations.

Avalanche Activity

The wind slabs represent the main danger.

The wind slabs are to be found in particular in gullies and bowls and generally at high altitudes. They can be released in some cases above approximately 2300 m, caution is to be exercised at transitions from a shallow to a deep snowpack. Apart from the danger of being buried, restraint should be exercised as well in view of the danger of avalanches sweeping people along and giving rise to falls.
